Abstract

The U.S. Pacific Northwest (PNW, comprising the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) is a region of diverse landscapes and equally diverse climate change challenges. The Climate Impacts Group (CIG) at the University of Washington was established in 1995 to research the impacts of natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change on the PNW. The goal of this research is to help the region become more resilient to climate impacts by providing information that is useful to, and used by, decision makers. The team's research over the last decade has contributed to a substantive understanding of how climate affects the PNW environment and its communities, and the importance of preparing for climate impacts at the state and local level, particularly with respect to climate change.
